Demystifying the special education process for families navigating the special education system in Hawaii

If you are here because you need help, welcome. I am from Kona, am a graduate of Konawaena High School, a former outrigger paddler (Kai O'pua & Healani CC), a sister, cousin, aunty, and daughter to my parents Charlie & Dale Kaneshiro.

I have worked with hundreds of families navigating the special education system during my 12-year tenure as a special education teacher and services coordinator in the Hawaii Public Schools. Friends and family have sought my advice in four areas:

• Supporting their children in self-advocacy

• Understanding the terminology used in IEP's and 504's as it relates to their child
