About this work
Independent schools are built for flexibility and autonomy
Independent schools are built for flexibility and autonomy — but that same independence means leaders are often navigating student support without the established frameworks, specialist infrastructure, or institutional models that guide their counterparts elsewhere.
Most of what works has to be built.
I've spent more than a decade doing exactly that work — building the systems, policies, and practices that make student support sustainable and equitable in independent school communities. And while my deepest expertise is in independent schools, the need for strong systems crosses all school contexts. I work with leaders in both independent and public settings.
My consulting brings that expertise to your school. My coaching makes sure the work becomes yours to lead — long after our engagement ends.
What I bring
This isn't general leadership coaching. It's specialized expertise in an underserved area, delivered in a way that builds your capacity alongside your school's.
Doctoral-level expertise in program evaluation, research methods, educational systems, and student support
Deep knowledge of independent school culture, governance, and constraints
Practical experience building systems most private schools don't yet have
A coaching methodology that ensures you understand and own what we build
A systems lens that connects individual leadership to school-wide equity
What this work is
Most school leaders can choose between two kinds of support: a consultant who tells them what to do, or a coach who helps them think it through. Both have real value. Both have real limits.
My practice combines them. I bring deep expertise in educational systems and student support — and I deliver it through a coaching approach that is personalized, reflective, and responsive to your specific school and role.
Consulting and
coaching, combined.
The result goes beyond a recommendation. It's practical actionable steps you can implement, adapt, and sustain after our work together ends.

ONE-OFF WORKSHOP
Consulting + coaching
What this work produces
Not notes from a session. Systems your school will actually use.
Every engagement is unique, but the structure is intentional. We build across the year — from the big picture down to the tools — so that by the time we're done, the infrastructure is in place and the thinking behind it is yours.
01
Orient to the year
Map recurring responsibilities, anticipate pressure points, and build a calendar before the year builds it for you.
02
Vision and plan
Get clear on what you're building toward — for yourself, your team, and the students and families you serve.
03
Build team systems
Design meeting structures, communication norms, and feedback loops that work for your team — not a generic team.
04
Sustain and reflect
Close the year with systems that outlast the engagement — and the clarity to know what to tend to next.
Examples of what clients have created
Planning tool
Cyclical calendar
A living document mapping recurring tasks and key dates across the year — so nothing sneaks up on you.
Visioning doc
Vision and action plan
A structured document to get your thinking out of your head and into a form that's workable, shareable, and revisable.
Policy & process
Student support toolkit
A complete set of documents — policy, process overview, family and teacher guides, and planning forms — ready for your school community.
Reference
Team communication playbook
A curated set of activities your team can use to build communication norms — created to fit your context, not pulled off the internet.
Team tool
Team meeting reset activity
A facilitated activity to evaluate what's working in current meeting practices — and collaboratively decide what to keep, add, or ditch.
Workflow system
Workflow and feedback structures
Systems for managing your own workload and creating clear feedback loops with your team, your students, and their families.
These are examples, not a menu. Every engagement starts with a needs assessment and is built around your specific role, school, and goals. The deliverables that come out of our work will be yours — built with you, not handed to you.
Is this the right fit?
This work is designed for leaders who are ready to engage — not just receive passively. The leaders who get the most from it share a few things in common.
A great fit if you are…
Reflective, curious about your own leadership, and willing to try new approaches. You see professional development as an investment, not a checkbox. You want support that meets you where you actually are.
A better fit elsewhere if you need…
A quick fix, a ready-made solution to drop in without engaging with it, or validation of decisions already made. If that's where you are right now, a targeted workshop may serve you better — and I'm glad to point you in the right direction.
In their words
"Coaching with Alyson allowed me to work strategically and responsively throughout the school year — on issues I anticipated as well as challenges that came up organically."
When I was promoted, I asked my supervisor, "What book should I read?" I'm so glad she suggested coaching instead. Thanks to Alyson's expertise, positive and affirming framing, and systems lens, my first year as a school leader was more manageable and I feel more prepared than I ever have for the year to come. Do not hesitate to work with Alyson. Her mentorship is more valuable than any management book or summer course.
